Tourists in the Somiedo Natural Park

A day in the Somiedo Natural Park, Asturias

Principality of Asturias

In this community, you will discover a true natural paradise, with landscapes where human activity is practically non-existent, a true example of which is the Somiedo Nature Reserve. One of the best preserved of the protected areas in Asturias, where you will find one of the purest natural areas in all of Spain. Four large valleys form this natural park, giving rise to a large number of plans, routes and activities that you can enjoy while spending a perfect day in nature.

  • Calabazosa Lake in the Somiedo Biosphere Reserve

    The lakes of Saliencia

Four lakes that are part of the Somiedo Biosphere Reserve. To discover them, you can take a simple circular route of about eight kilometres in length, which you will complete in about three hours. First of all, you will find La Cueva lake, at no less than 1,570 metres above sea level. If you keep going up, you’ll reach Lake Almagrera, which, though you may find it dry, will reward you with truly amazing views. A little further on, you will see Cerveriz Lake, with dark waters where you will surely be accompanied by a few grazing cows. Finally, you will reach Lake Calabazosa, the deepest one, with a beautiful landscape filled with turquoise and green-toned waters.

  • Brown bear in Asturias

    Bear watching

One of the most exciting plans that the natural park offers you is the possibility of seeing these impressive mammals. Despite the large size of this place, one of the areas where it will be easier for you to spot these animals is near the town of Pola de Somiedo. Some companies offer wildlife spotting experiences here, which will multiply the chances of spotting these impressive creatures. This activity is one of the most recommended, especially for families, since for the little ones it will be a real adventure.

  • Teito at Somiedo Nature Reserve

Discover the “brañas” (mountain pastures) and the “teitos” (traditional Asturian huts)

As you walk along trails in the heart of nature and through the valleys of the natural park, you will see groups of cabins spread across green meadows. This settlement of small huts was once used as a base for shepherds travelling across the brañas, mountain pastures with grass and water, with their herds of cows, goats or sheep during the autumn and spring. These odd stone constructions, the teitos will undoubtedly catch your attention, especially because of their green roofs, which you may not be used to. Some of the most famous brañas can be found in La Pornacal, Mumián or Saliencia.

  • The Prince's viewpoint in the Somiedo Natural Park

    The Prince's Viewpoint

One of the best ways to end the day is to climb to this magnificent viewpoint, from where you can observe the Somiedo Natural Park from above. To get here, you will have to pass through a small village, La Peral, dedicated almost entirely to dairy farming. In the past, this village was only inhabited during spring and autumn, the periods during which livestock was moved to higher ground. Once you leave your car in the village, you must walk up approximately one kilometre until you reach the Príncipe natural viewing point, opened in 1990 and at an altitude of approximately 1,380 metres.

These are just some of the activities you can do in a day in the beautiful surroundings of Somiedo Natural Park, but there are many more, excursions and activities for the whole family with which you will enjoy a perfect day in the heart of nature.
