Rural weekend getaways in Spain
If you want to unwind, there’s nothing better than a rural getaway in Spain. You’ll find so many quiet, tranquil places where you can lose yourself. Here you have a few ideas for some initial inspiration:
-
Cabrales, Asturias
As well as producing one of the best blue cheeses in the world, its privileged position right in the middle of the Picos de Europa makes this little town a great place to enjoy some incredible views and hiking routes like the Cares trail. Here you’ll find a haven of peace in the heart of nature
-
El Bierzo, León
In this region you can visit some spectacular landscapes, like Las Médulas, left by centuries of mining for gold by the Romans. Don’t miss the capital, Ponferrada, a heritage city. A key point on the Camino de Santiago, it boasts an enormous 12th-century Templar castle. You’ll also find pretty little villages such as Molinaseca, Peñalba de Santiago, and Villafranca del Bierzo.
-
Albarracín, Teruel
One of the prettiest villages in Spain, which has more years of history than it does inhabitants. The best thing is that once you’ve enjoyed the walled city and its winding streets, nearby you’ll find some lovely places such as Pinares de Rodeno with its cave art, the waterfall of Calomerde and the La Hoz gorge.
-
Besalú, Girona
A medieval village frozen in time, with a 11th-century bridge that’s 105 metres long. Here you’ll find a beautiful village full of life on the banks of the river Fluviá. Lose yourself in the Jewish quarter, visit the imposing Church of Sant Vicenç, and if you have time go on to nearby Castellfollit de la Roca, a village perched on the top of a sheer cliff.
So what are you waiting for, plan your getaway to one of these destinations, and really switch off from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
