Pontevedra (Province)

Galicia

The province is in the region of Galicia, in north-west Spain. Within just a few kilometres, visitors can go from mountain landscapes to the coastline along the Rías Baixas estuary. It is full of beauty spots and viewing points overlooking the estuaries, including the outstanding Islas Atlánticas National Park and its magnificent beaches.

It is well worth discovering the treasures of the Romanesque Route, to see the traditional Galician mansions known as pazos, and visiting places in Pontevedra such as Marín, with its megalithic monuments; Vilaboa and Poio for their rock engravings; and La Guardia, Sanxenxo, Cambados and Illa de Arousa, all with fabulous beaches. Not to be missed is the capital, Pontevedra, and its historic quarter.

The fiestas of this region reflect its ancestral traditions; these include the round-up of wild horses in the festival known as A Rapa das bestas in Sabucedo, the Viking Procession in Catoira, Corpus Christi in Ponteareas, the Arribada de la Carabela Pinta in Baiona (a historical re-enactment of the arrival of Columbus' ship La Pinta) and the Albariño Wine Festival in Cambados, all declared to be of International Tourist Interest. The most famous product in the local cuisine of Pontevedra is without a doubt its shellfish (celebrated in festivals such as the Exaltation of Shellfish at O Grove), always accompanied by the famous local wine, Albariño, the star of the Rías Baixas Wine Route.
