It is located in the south of the region of Extremadura in western Spain. It is the largest province in the country, and is a land of contrasts. Its landscape features pastures dotted with holm oaks, in combination with mountains and Mediterranean forests. It is also the site of natural treasures such as the Cornalvo Nature Reserve.
Visitors will find castles, Arab citadels and historic Jewish quarters, as well as the chance to explore the Mudejar Route. Places of interest include the historical quarters of towns such as Alburquerque, Jerez de los Caballeros, Olivenza and Zafra, and particularly the capital, Merida, whose Archaeological Site has been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO.
