Santa Caterina market's striking roof – in wave form, with multicoloured ceramics on wood – is certainly what initially brings visitors to discover this corner of Barcelona. It was opened in 1845, as the first covered market in Barcelona, and its latest renovation by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, was completed in 2005.

Located in the La Ribera neighbourhood, Santa Caterina Market combines fresh food stalls of all kinds – meat, fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, sausage products – with gourmet spots for high-quality oils and preserves, a bread oven and much more, and all rounded off with a delicious offering of cuisine. Mediterranean, oriental and vegetarian cuisine is served in the setting of the building's neoclassical façade, which was maintained in the new design. Santa Caterina Market has become a place not to be missed by anyone visiting Barcelona's historic district and wanting to enjoy a food fusion space.
