San Fernando Castle
San Fernando Castle is considered the largest bastion fortress in Europe. It was built to respond to the need to reinforce the frontier to protect the Spanish region of El Ampurdán from invasion by foreign troops.
It is located in the privileged setting of the bay of La Rosa on the Costa Brava, barely 800 metres from the Dalí Museum. It is formed by two spaces that cover a total area of 550,000 square metres. Below the parade ground there are four large cisterns that can be visited in inflatable boats. One of the castle's highlights is the parade ground, with a total area of 12,000 metres. The inner enclosure is formed by five bastions of different sizes. Its stables are housed in an imposing hangar with room for 450 horses. It has been open to the public since 1997.
