Patio de los Naranjos in the Great Mosque of Cordoba

Orange Tree Courtyard of the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba

Córdoba

It can be considered the oldest “living” garden in Europe, since its beginning can be dated back to the initial construction work for the mosque in 784, with Abd al-Rahman I. It is an enclosed area, about fifty by thirty metres divided into three parts, each with a beautiful Renaissance fountain in the centre. From the beginning it had plant elements such as pomegranates, cypresses and palm trees and today the plantation consists of ninety-eight orange trees planted in rows that date back to at least the end of the 18th century.
