The Naval Museum was inaugurated in its current location on Paseo del Prado in 1932. The site explores the background and history of the Spanish navy, and also offers a panoramic journey through the navies of other countries. Inside, an impressive ethnographic collection is on display in chronological order, from the era of the Catholic Monarchs up to the present day. It features coin collections, military decorations, maps, paintings, nautical and scientific instruments, artillery, submarine weapons, manuscripts and much more. The star of its current collection is the flagship of the Spanish navy, the aircraft carrier Príncipe de Asturias.
