Tarraco's Roman past
The pieces on display illustrate the process of Romanisation that took place on the Iberian peninsula.
This museum was created in the 19th century and is the oldest in its field in Catalonia. Most of its collection has been recovered over the last 150 years, after excavations carried out at the nearby Palaeo-Christian Necropolis. The items on display here show the historic and architectural importance of the Roman city of Tarraco. In its rooms you will also find numerous remains of sculptures, mosaics, architectural items, ceramics, household and military utensils, amphorae, clothing, funerary objects, coins... Many of these pieces come from areas of the city with important monuments such as the Roman theatre, circus, amphitheatre and forum.
