La Rioja Museum

La Rioja

A journey from prehistoric times through to the 20th century.

The museum is situated in Espartero Palace, a Baroque building dating from the 18th-century.

It has a total area of 3,042 square metres, of which 1,138 are in the Espartero Palace and 1,903 in a new building. The first floor invites visitors to take a tour through the prehistoric age, the pre-Roman era and the Roman world in all its various spheres such as the economy, beliefs, worship… The second floor houses pieces from archaeological collections, and fine arts items from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque. These include the panels from San Millán and the altarpiece from Torremuña. On the first floor there are collections of paintings from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, with items on loan from the Prado Museum. There is also a space dedicated to ethnography (agriculture, livestock farming, home life…) All these contents are explained by means of panels, audiovisual displays, touch screens, including a special position for the blind.
