A castle for modern art

Created at the initiative of architect César Manrique, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC) is housed in Castillo de San José, a former 18th-century military fortress.

The MIAC was founded in 1976 with the aim of gathering and exhibiting some of the most important works of modern artistic creation. Most of its collection belongs to the period between the 1950s and 1970s and to the abstraction artistic movement. Artists such as Tàpies, Michavila and César Manrique himself have had their work displayed here, and it now plays host to creations by internationally renowned artists.
