The City History Museum is responsible for ensuring research into, as well as conservation and promotion of Barcelona's heritage. It is an active institution that interprets and explains the city using its own collections as well as those of other museums and the urban historical legacy that shapes it. Visitors can explore Barcelona's history through material remnants of the past. Beneath the Plaza del Rei square, Calle Comtes street, the Plaza de Sant Iu square, the Marès Museum and part of the gothic cathedral, you can visit an archaeological area with significant remains that show the origins of the city; namely the Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino colony that was founded by the Romans 2000 years ago.
