Archaeology and painting
The Museum has two locations in two buildings: One dedicated to Archaeology and Paleontology, another to Fine Arts. The first building exhibits a huge and comprehensive collection of archaeological items, which date back to the Paleolithic, as well as items and objects up to the Modern Age, including Iberian remains excavated from the Alarcos hill site, the Roman mosaics from the Alcázar de San Juan or the door of the old synagogue in Ciudad Real. The section dedicated to natural sciences contains fossil remains dating back some three million years, found in paleontological excavations in a volcanic area such as the Las Higueruelas site. The second building, which is found in the Convent of La Merced, exhibits paintings, sculpture, items with precious metals and ceramics from the 16th to 18th century, as well as a selection of contemporary art by renowned artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Sánchez and Antonio Saura.
