Calatayud Municipal Museum

Zaragoza

A journey into the most distant history

The museum was established focussing on the Roman settlement of Bílbilis, where the city was originally founded, although it also looks at other periods of history.

The Convent of the Discalced Carmelites of Calatayud houses this museum dedicated in large part to the ancient Roman city of Bílbilis, about 6 kilometres from the current Aragonese town. Among the remains that are preserved, those of the Forum, the Theatre, the Baths and the Temple stand out. Visitors can get an insight into daily life at this time through different sculptures, architecture, paintings, ceramics, goldwork, inscriptions, personal objects, etc. Also on display are pieces dating back to prehistory and the Celtiberian civilisation, as well as from the Muslim era, Middle Ages and modern times.
