Monastery of Santes Creus
Aiguamúrcia
Representative example of a Cistercian monastery.
It is located in the Alt Camp region, in a valley near Gaiá River.
The complex is an excellent example of the architectural influences of Cistercian monasteries. Its construction spans time between the 12th and 18th centuries. The façade of the church, crowned by battlements, is Romanesque from the 11th century and contains a spectacular Gothic window. It has a Latin cross plan, with three naves and five chapels. The cloister was built in a Gothic style by Jaume II in 1313. The tombs of several abbots of the monastery are sculpted on the floor of the chapter house. This monument is included in the Cistercian Route, which includes a visit to Poblet Monastery.
