San Salvador de Oña Monastery

Burgos

Its powerful status between the 11th and 14th centuries is reflected in its variety of styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Arab, Mudejar and even Roman.

A Gothic church built over an earlier Romanesque church, with a Gothic cloister from the beginning of the 16th century. It was founded at the start of the 11th century by the Count of Castile, Sancho García. It grew continually from the 11th century to the 14th century, thanks to large donations from kings, bishops and the nobility. The main façade is Baroque. The sepulchres of the last Counts of Castile are in the main chapel’s sanctuary. The main altarpiece is Baroque. The choir stalls are Gothic. The sepulchres of Sancho García, his wife Doña Urraca and their son are in the church transept.
