Monastery of San Pablo (Peñafiel)
Valladolid
Juan Manuel, nephew of King Alfonso X the Wise, ordered this Dominican monastery built over his uncle’s former fortress. The building was created to be its founder’s mausoleum. Its 14th-century Gothic Mudéjar apse is a masterpiece. Also notable are its 16th-century Plateresque funerary chapels and its exterior decorated with coats of arms.
