La Jayona Mine

Nature takes over the mine
The La Jayona Mine Natural Mine is situated in the Sierra de La Jayona Mountains, some 700 metres above sea level and covers 80 hectares. Its landscape is typically Mediterranean, although the microclimate inside the mine is especially interesting.
The cave is extremely interesting from a geo-ecological standpoint. Its environmental features are typical of vertical rock formations; its lighting conditions and humidity are similar to those of river gorges; and its fauna and flora are outstanding. Its vegetation is typical of a humid climate, which contrasts with the Mediterranean hills. Many small animals find shelter here, as well as majestic birds. There are also mammals, such as the colony of bats that live in the old mine galleries. The large fault plane that can be observed in one of the rooms, together with the beautiful folds and iron mineralization, increase its geological value. Its shafts, galleries and mine structures are spectacular and offer different sounds and light displays that vary according to the time of year.
