The Prince's Garden is a unique example of the “landscape style” in a royal Spanish garden. It was commissioned by the Prince of Asturias, future King Charles IV. It was created between 1772 and 1804, with the first plan for the garden designed by Pablo de Boutelou. Juan de Villanueva was also involved to some extent, as he was responsible for some of the minor architectural work. It has a relatively formal layout, with paths arranged in an orthogonal pattern enclosing various characteristic elements of the landscape designer’s repertoire, such as a pool with a Chinese pavilion, an artificial mound topped by a shrine, a mock tomb in the lake, a grotto and imitation ruins.
