The museum was opened in 2017 and is now a leading authority in the study of Iberian culture, which flourished in Andalusia and other regions of south east Spain between the 6th and 1st centuries BC.
It has become a unique cultural space for the preservation and dissemination of the legacy of one of the most fascinating civilisations of the Iberian Peninsula: The Iberians. This is what ancient Greek writers called the people who settled in the south and east of the Iberian Peninsula before the Romanisation of this territory. The Iberians spoke different languages, but they shared cultural traits: the form of hierarchical aristocratic political organisation, the burial and cremation rite, and territorial and urban planning. The museum building, located in the heart of the city of Jaén is in itself a work of art, with a structure that evokes the monumental character of the Iberian culture it houses. It consists of an exceptional collection of archaeological pieces that includes sculptures, ceramics, weapons and everyday objects. Among the most notable works is the sculpture of the Warrior of Cerrillo Blanco, an impressive example of the art and technical skill of the Iberians. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum offers numerous educational activities, workshops and temporary exhibitions.
