Church of Santiago, in Cáceres

Although there are documents which place the origins of this church in the 12th century, the oldest remains found so far date from the 14th century. In the 16th century, Gil de Hontañón took charge of restoring the building. Exceptional elements dating from that time include the main chapel, with its star-shaped ribbed vault, and the sacristy. After the works were abandoned, they were continued by Sancho de Cabrera, who was responsible for the covered nave with cross vaults. Features worth noting on the exterior include its two façades with openings in the shape of a semicircular arch, framed by the characteristic Islamic moulding known as an alfiz. The interior contains an exceptional altarpiece by Alonso Berruguete and a Renaissance screen by Francisco Núñez, as well as carved images of Cristo de los Milagros, Nuestra Señora de la Esclarecida and Jesús Nazareno.
