Church of San Nicolás de Bari (Madrigal de las Altas Torres)

The birthplace of queens and literary figures, Madrigal de las Altas Torres owes its name to the monumental tower crowning this church, which is also interesting for its Mudéjar elements.

Built in the 13th century in the Romanesque-Mudéjar style, it was subsequently remodelled several times, most drastically in the 15th century, the date of the three naves (in two storeys, one Gothic and the other Renaissance) and the rectangular apse. The most important features of the church are its Mudéjar elements. This is the style of the two side apses off the sanctuary, with blind brick arcades and zig-zag friezes. Also Mudéjar is the austere belltower in three sections, which stands at a height of almost 50 metres and has very few windows and abutments, reminiscent of the French abbey churches. The interior houses some splendid and highly intricate Mudéjar coffered ceilings dating from the 16th century, which were fully restored in 2004.
