Church of San Esteban (Zamora)

The church of San Esteban is one of the most important in Zamora in the style known as late or advanced Romanesque.

It was built between the late 12th and 13th centuries and is unusual in that throughout the 18th century the interior was almost completely reformed in the Baroque style of the time. Until a few years ago it was the site of the Baltasar Lobo museum –which has now been moved to Zamora Castle–, dedicated to the work of this 20th-century Zamora-born sculptor. It has the traditional structure of this type of Romanesque buildings in Zamora, with a single broad nave reinforced on the exterior with buttresses, giving onto a sanctuary with a triple straight apse. The central apse has an elegant window set between two columns and a double archivolt. It has two doorways with splayed semicircular archivolts.
