Tito Bustillo Cave

Asturias

Prehistoric paintings of female forms.

Set in a group of Palaeolithic caves.

Almost all of the Tito Bustillo site is painted. The prehistoric representations vary according to the period in question and are superimposed one over the other, depending on the preferences of the cave’s inhabitants between 22,000 and 10,000 BC. Of all the pictures of animals, (horses, reindeer, etc.) there is one of a cetacean that is particularly interesting, as this species is very infrequent in prehistoric art. However, the most important drawings are those of the female body, which make use of the natural relief of the rock to suggest the woman’s volume. All these paintings of women are located in a single hall.
