Laja Alta Cave
In an especially strategic location, La Laja Cave offers peculiar cave paintings, which are almost unique on the Spanish Mediterranean coast.
Laja Alta Cave is situated next to the valley in the Gomero gorge, and it affords views over Algeciras Bay and the Rock of Gibraltar. This special feature is outstanding because of the uniqueness of its schematic cave paintings that ancient artists made on sandstone in the cave, which is a veritable catalogue of all kinds of ships from the time, approximately from the two first centuries in the 1st millennium BC. There we'll find the ships used by the first sailors and colonisers of the Eastern Mediterranean, which the painters in Laja Alta saw, anchored in the port in the nearby Pre-Roman town of "Carteia" (in Algeciras Bay).
