The Casa del Cordón was built at the request of the Constables of Castile in the 15th century. It was designed by Simón de Colonia. This palace was where the Catholic Monarchs met with Christopher Columbus upon his return from his second voyage to America. The Courts of 1515, which approved the union between the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile, were also held there. It was an emblematic building for the monarchy of the time. All the Habsburgs stayed in this house at some point. The “Cordón” in its name refers to the Franciscan cord that frames the main doorway. It is currently the home of the Cultural Cordón exhibition centre, which belongs to the Caja de Burgos Foundation.
