Casa Amatller house

Barcelona

This work by the architect Puig i Cadafalch combines the neo-Gothic style with a curious stepped gable. It is located near the buildings of Casa Batlló, Gaudí, and the Casa Lleó Morera, by Domènech i Montaner.

The original construction was built by Antoni Robert in 1875, and in 1898 the Amatller family commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to redesign it. The work is part of his 'pink' or Modernist period. This is a typical house in the urban Gothic style (resembling a single-family mansion, and set off by the delicate shutters on the balcony of the main floor) with Germanic elements such as the eye-catching stepped gable created in ceramic tiles. The concierge's office is open to visitors, and has one of the finest stained-glass windows of the Modernist period. There is an exhibition space on the ground floor.
