It is considered one of the buildings of greatest artistic value in the province of Cádiz.
It was built in the second half of the 15th century on the initiative of the knight Álvaro Obertos de Valeto. Its outstanding features include the Greco-Roman portico, the chapel of Santa María de la Defensión, the Gothic cloister, and the Arrayanes courtyard. There are notable paintings by Roelas decorating the main altar in the church.
