In addition to the Historic Botanical Garden that the city of Barcelona already had, a new Botanical Garden was built on Montjuïc mountain in 1999. This new garden complements the previous one, which was more focused on medicinal and horticultural plants, since it is organized according to totally atypical and novel criteria: The plants have been selected and grouped according to a “Mediterranean” criterion. The garden is structured over 14 hectares and includes 2,000 species from the five Mediterranean climate regions of the world: The Mediterranean basin, western California, central Chile, and the southernmost extremes of South Africa and Australia.
