Fonseca Palace, in Salamanca

Archbishop Fonseca College

Salamanca

Founded by the Archbishop of Toledo, Alonso de Fonseca, construction began in 1521 according to the project of Juan de Álava. Other architects such as Diego de Siloé, Gil de Hontañón and Alonso de Covarrubias also participated in its construction. It is built around a courtyard that is accessed through a hall with an ogive vault decorated with star motifs. The courtyard has two floors: the lower floor has semicircular arches and the upper floor has segmental arches. Both floors are decorated with medallions, the work of Juan de Álava and Pedro de Ibarra, representing a series of 'Uomini Famosi' or illustrious men. On the main façade are the sculptures of Saint Augustine and Saint Ildefonso, along with the medallion of Santiago in the battle of Clavijo. The chapel features an altarpiece made up of paintings and sculptures by Alonso Berruguete. It is currently a university residence.
