It aims to preserve and disseminate the archaeological remains that illustrate the historical evolution of Catalonia, from prehistory to the medieval period.
The MAC is currently made up of the archaeological museums of Barcelona and Girona, the Greco-Roman city of Empúries, the historic complex of Olèrdola, the Iberian site of Ullastret and the Centre for Underwater Archaeology of Catalonia (CASC). The headquarters are located in the Catalan capital, in the Palace of Graphic Arts of the Barcelona International Exposition (1929). The more than 3,000 square metres occupied by the permanent exhibition bring to light the history of the region, emphasising its European and Mediterranean dimensions.
