Empúries
The important archaeological site at Empúries was inhabited by different civilisations over the ages. The city was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. Later the Romans arrived, bringing reforms and new wealth to the city. It disappeared in the 3rd century AD with the invasion of the Franks. The area conserves small houses with mosaic floors in white marble, Roman cisterns, the foundations of the porticoed square and the sacred area of the temples of Aesculapius and Zeus Serapis. Excavations carried out up have so far uncovered numerous different items, including bronze pieces, ceramics and Greek sculptures.
