Zafra Fortress
Current site of a National Tourist Parador.
Its construction was begun by Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa in 1437. It is a rectangular building with battlements in which the keep is the outstanding feature. From the outside it has the appearance of a fortress. Inside, however, it is notable for its palatial elegance. It has a central courtyard with a Renaissance cloister, created according to the plans of Juan de Herrera. As well as its rooms, the coffered ceiling of the Gothic-Mudejar dome covering the chapel and the Arab influence in the Golden Room deserve special attention.
