Alcázar fortress in Toledo

Alcázar fortress in Toledo

Toledo

Current home of the city's Army Museum. The building's construction dates back to Roman times. It was rebuilt during the reigns of Alfonso VI and Alfonso X the Wise, creating the first Alcázar fortress with a square floor plan and towers at the corners.

Under Emperor Charles V, it was rebuilt again, this time by the architect Alonso de Covarrubias. The façades are from the Renaissance period, with fortified towers and crenellated defences, built following early designs by Alonso de Covarrubias and later by Juan de Herrera. The building also houses the Regional Library of Castilla-La Mancha on its upper floor.
