Rioja Alavesa Wine Route

Araba-Álava

This region in northern Spain, called Rioja Alavesa produces some of the famous Rioja wines. Due to its geographical location between the river Ebro and the Sierra de Cantabria, this area has a special microclimate perfect for cultivating grape vines. The quality of such prestigious wines is also influenced by the care and dedication of the local people who have successfully combined traditional winemaking processes with new technologies. This means that, if you visit the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route, you will be able to taste a range of wines from those aged in Medieval caves to vintages produced in the most state-of-the-art wineries.

What are the wines like?

Red wine is the most characteristic product of Rioja Alavesa. Most of it is based on the Tempranillo grape. These wines have a bright, brilliant colour, a refined, intense bouquet and a fruity flavour, making them velvety and warm on the palate. The result is a balanced wine, which leaves you with a sensation you want to feel again.

What I can find

Along with medieval wineries, you will also discover avant-garde art in buildings designed by incredibly famous architects: the Ysios Winery, by Santiago Calatrava; the Ciudad del Vino complex, by Frank O. Gehry for Marqués de Riscal; or Bodegas Baigorri, by Iñaki Aspiazu Iza, are a few examples. The Wine Museum in Laguardia will show you the rituals and history of wine in an enjoyable way. Wine therapy treatments in El Ciego. Cuisine with an international reputation: the gastronomy of the Basque Country. The region has a significant cultural heritage, particularly the historic quarter of Laguardia, ranging from Romanesque shrines and stately homes to archaeological sites, such as the Settlement of La Hoya and the prehistoric dolmens in Elvillar and Leza. You can take excursions to places such as the Pinar de Dueñas pine forest in Labraza and the Urbasa Nature Reserve near Kripan to enjoy contact with nature.
