Sierra Mágina Nature Reserve
A landscape dominated by the Spanish ibex
This is the home of the Spanish ibex, and also of wild boars, holm oaks, gall oaks, olive trees and cherry trees.
The Sierra Mágina Nature Reserve lies within the municipal districts of Albánchez de Mágina, Bedmar, Bélmez de la Moraleda, Cambil, Huelma, Jimena, Jódar, Pegalájar and Torres. It contains the highest mountain in the province, within an altitude of 2,167 metres, and is about 30 km from the capital. It covers an area of almost 20,000 hectares between the basins of the Guadalquivir and Guadiana Menor rivers, and has a very rugged landscape, due particularly to its limestone rocks. The predominant activity in the area since the 15th century is farming, with olive groves and fig and cherry orchards.

Cultural information
Visitors can see the remains of fortifications and castles dating from the 13th and 15th centuries such as the towers of Bélmez and Cuadros, the Bedmar, Jódar and Albánchez castles in Úbeda, and the remnants of Arab fortresses and city walls in Jimena and Cambil.

Environmental information
Sierra Mágina is home to several species which have a very restricted distribution in the southern Iberian Peninsula. The vegetation is basically Mediterranean, with holm oaks, junipers and gall oaks. There are also olive, cherry and almond trees, rosemary and maple, these last growing at heights of 1800 metres. There are also examples of threatened high-mountain flora. The fauna consists mainly of kestrels, falcons, golden eagles, ring ouzels, finches, greenfinches and goldfinches, in addition to populations of Spanish ibex and wild boar. It is also a nesting area for the Bonelli eagle.
