Sierra Cebollera Nature Reserve
Nature at its purest
Sierra Cebollera is one of the best preserved regions in terms of flora and fauna, especially when it comes to its magnificent forests.
The park is located in the central mountains of the northern Iberian range, in the region of Cameros in La Rioja, bordering the province of Soria. This protected area is home to some of the best examples of woodlands in the Iberian mountain range. These include natural forests of Scots pine, beech and oak, and other extraordinary species such as birch, sessile oak, mountain holm oak and black pine. There are also lime trees, maples, mountain ash, whitebeams, mountain elms, yews, white elms and European ash. Mammals include foxes, wild boar, deer, squirrels and wildcats in the forests, and otters and Pyrenean desman in the rivers. There are numerous species of forest birds of prey, such as the goshawk, sparrowhawk, honey buzzard, booted eagle, common buzzard and short-toed eagle. Nocturnal birds such as the long-eared owl and the tawny owl are also seen. The mountain range is considered an area of international importance for the passage of migratory birds.
