Vegacervera beech forest in Los Arguellos Biosphere Reserve

Los Argüellos Biosphere Reserve

León

A place for caving

The Los Argüellos Biosphere Reserve, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2005, is a representative example of an ecosystem in the mountain range of Cantabria.

The Argüellos are located in Castile and León, in the central area of the north of the province of León and include the municipalities of Vegacervera, Cármenes and Valdelugueros. Its uniqueness lies in its landscape, which combines aesthetic value and scientific interest: Several of the existing caves have significant biodiversity, while their ravines and karst formations help us understand the geological processes of the Cantabrian Mountains, the only example in Europe that presents a high mountain ecosystem located so close to the sea and at such a relatively low altitude. The orography of Los Argüellos is, precisely, one of its main attractions. Caving enthusiasts will enjoy the spectacularly beautiful caves, such as Valporquero, Llamazares and Barredo; narrow crevices and gorges and impressive ravines, such as the Vegacervera and Valdeteja gorges. The numerous cavities and fissures make it possible for 15 of the 26 species of bats found on the Iberian Peninsula to live in this small area. Birds of prey are also representative.
