Enjoy a winery experience close to Barcelona

Visiting a winery close to Barcelona is a perfect outing to enjoy with a partner, in a group, or even in a business context. A one-day experience you’ll always remember. Just like good wine.

The first step is to decide your route. Barcelona is surrounded by vineyards so you’ll have many to choose from. There are three destinations with their own Designation of Origin (D.O.); the label which indicates—and guarantees—the provenance and quality of the product. The first wineries are found half an hour away by car in Alella (Barcelona coast). Travelling south, in less than an hour you arrive at Penedés, winegrowing epicentre and the home of cava, the region’s sparkling wine. A third option, going inland, is Pla de Bages.Barcelona is also the district with the most organic wine in Spain, so it might be interesting to include a winery dedicated to sustainable cultivation on your route.

The normal visit consists of a vineyard tour during which the local culture and the process of making cava are explained. Finally, different varieties of the product are tasted. In addition, many wineries offer activities to enrich the visit:- Intensive wine-tasting courses.- Entry to museums or visitors’ centres.- Food and wine experiences such as pairing and gourmet tastings.- Traditional Catalan cuisine in a local restaurant.- Trips through the vineyard by bike or on horseback.- Themed tours: history, architecture or natural environments.- Hot-air balloon rides (for brave people who aren’t scared of heights).

Almost all these activities can be booked online. It’s always best to hire local operators for their knowledge of the area, their respect for the environment and the contribution to local economic activity. If you want to stay longer, there are rustic rural hotels close to the wineries.A day spent among the wineries of Barcelona is about much more than wine; it’s an immersive experience which allows you to understand (and perhaps, love) part of the Mediterranean essence. As Dalí once said, “great wine requires a madman to grow the vine, a wise man to watch over it, a lucid poet to make it, and a lover to understand it...”
