What to see and do in Cáceres, a World Heritage City and a filming location for the Game of Thrones

Cáceres

Romans, Muslims, Jews and Christians built and wrote the history of the city of Cáceres. You will soon see why UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1986. The architecture here includes a number of buildings constructed between the 14th and 18th centuries. Whether you're staying for a weekend or longer, the beauty hidden among its walls will take your breath away. Let the journey begin!

There are so many things to see and do in this fortified city, but here are some of the ones that you absolutely cannot miss during your trip: Plaza Mayor square The epicentre of the city, where you'll find a number of bars and terraces. It's the perfect starting point for exploring the old town. In the square you'll find the Arco de la Estrella, the town hall and the Bujaco tower, which you can climb up to enjoy the spectacular panoramic view. It's one of the largest squares in Spain. Plaza de Santa María This is where many of the cities festivities are held. You can also explore the church of Santa María. It was the first on to be built after the Reconquista.

The Jewish QuarterThere were two Jewish quarters in Cáceres, the New and the Old. It is in the latter where you can visit the old synagogue. The best idea is to stroll along the backstreets and admire the impressive façades on the various homes. Las Veletas Palace (Cáceres Museum)At this palace, also known as Casa de los Aljibes, you will discover one of the city's best kept secrets: one of the best preserved Arabic wells (aljibes) in the world.  And the fact that you were waiting for: some of the scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed in the old town, right here. Cáceres will take your breath away, as will Extremadura. It's a land of great natural beauty and traditional cuisine.
