A great trajectory
This event has a long history, and has been held every year without interruption since 1968. Moreover, it was the world’s first fantasy film festival, as well as one of the most culturally relevant and long-standing events in Catalonia. Such is its importance that, each year, the festival is attended by figures from the highest echelons of both the international film world, such as Quentin Tarantino and Jodie Foster, and homegrown artists like Álex de la Iglesia. What’s more, the festival is held at two iconic venues: Sitges’ two historic cinemas, El Retiro and El Prado, a building dating back to 1920 which was originally home to the Sitges abattoir, and the Maricel Palace, one of the area’s most iconic structures, which hosts various exhibitions throughout the year and also offers magnificent views of the Mediterranean.
