A walk around Girona, the city that conquered Game of Thrones

Girona

No dragons, no swords, no queens, no kings. Girona, located in the northeast of Spain, bewitched Game of Thrones, but when you visit it you will find many other fantastic places and extraordinary things to do that you will not be able to forget. Make a note of some of the must-see landmarks of this Catalan city.

Journey in time

Before beginning your visit, first stroll along the riverbank of the Oñar river and cross some of its bridges —like the puente Eiffel or the Pont de Pedra—, and have a look at the colourful houses overlooking the river and see the beauty of how they are reflected in it. Girona is of Roman origin with medieval, Romanesque, Gothic and modernist architecture. When you are strolling through the old quarter, you will feel that you are travelling back in time. It is made up of two walled enclosures: the Força Vella and the medieval extension.

Get to know different cultures

At the Força Vella, the Romans were the first to settle, and centuries later, the spectacular Cathedral was erected. It was built in honour of Santa María and it will surprise you with its long staircase and its Baroque façade. It has the widest Gothic nave in the world and an important museum-treasury. In this area you will also find el Call, or the old Jewish quarter, one of the best preserved in the world, and remains of the Roman and Carolingian walls. The Arab baths are close by, right in the middle of the medieval extension. You will also find the Sant Feliu Basilica, which was the first cathedral of Girona. You can stroll along the walls of the old coastal path that will give you wonderful views and a panoramic view of the entire city. If that isn´t enough, you'll find countless cultural and culinary plans throughout the year. And if you´re looking forward to seeing the sea, the city is very near the Costa Brava
