In Aracena there’s a cave hidden away where you just might bump into Alice

Huelva

The Gruta de las Maravillas cave is a natural treasure, where you can enter a world of fantasy. The result of millions of years of erosion, this was the first cave in Spain to be opened up to the public and to tourism back in 1914. Come and discover all its surrealism.

The grotto

The whole of the subterranean complex stretches for around 2,130 metres, of which 1,200 are open to visitors. The temperature is constant in the depths of the cave, always 16°C to 19°C, with around 98% humidity. As you walk through the chambers and galleries, you’ll see a huge number of rock formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, dripstone curtains and many more, which together with subterranean lakes and atmospheric lighting make for an unforgettable experience.

Chambers and visit

You’ll enter the complex via steps, and on the way down you’ll start to get an idea of how beautiful this cave is. The first chamber you come to will be the Shell Chamber, where the flow of the water will guide you on to the Diamond Chamber and the Manila Mantles Chamber, the first featuring crystal formations and the second with stalactites in a multitude of colours. Further on you’ll find the Great Lake, just before you get to the second level where you’ll see the massive stone columns that welcome you to the Cathedral Chamber. Next, you’ll discover the Glassware of God, the Chickpea Chamber, with its small crystals, and finally, right before the exit, the Nudes Chamber. This cave is simply stunning, a place where reality surpasses fiction. A wonder worthy of Alice’s own wonderland, but this one is real.
