View of the Zumaia flysch (Gipuzkoa, the Basque Country) on Itzurun Beach

Zumaia

Gipuzkoa

Zumaia is located on a privileged spot in the coast of Guipúzcoa, on the shore of the sea and the bay, at the point where the Urola and Narrondo rivers come together. The origins of this town can be traced to its ancient monastery. In the Middle Ages, the people that lived in the Sehatz valley, sick of enduring the continuous attacks of pirates and pillagers, fortified the city. That is why its church has a defensive appearance.

The city has two beaches: Itzurun and Santiago; as well as many interesting places such as the Home-Museum of painter Ignacio Zuloaga, which exhibits works by El Greco, Rivera, Zurbarán and Goya. Right across the street we have the museum of crafts and hand-crafted products of "Laia". Once in the city centre, we find the Basque-style Gothic church of San Pedro. It has a temple with a magnificent reredos by Juan de Antxieta, the only work by this Basque sculptor found in Guipuzcoa.
