Zorita de los Canes

A town in the region of La Alcarria, near the area of Embalses (reservoirs). It is located on a high rock, on the left bank of the Tajo river.

Its castle, which dates from the 12th-13th centuries, keeps a bastion tower, an iron gate with double arches, a refurbished Romanesque chapel, and the room of Moro. From the castle we can have a magnificent view of the Tajo river, the village's rooftops, and the lands of Zorita de los Canes. At the village we find an entrance gate from the ancient wall that dates from the 13th century. The most remarkable feature are the ruins of Recópolis, a Visigothic city commissioned by King Leovigild in the year 578, to honour his son Recared. Located on Oliva hill, it is one of the few Visigothic towns that remain in Spain, in addition to being the most ancient palace-basilica from the High Middle Ages that still stands in the whole of Western Europe.
