Villanueva de la Jara

This municipality can be found in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha. It is definitely worthwhile taking a stroll through the streets and squares in Villanueva de la Jara to admire its hermitages, churches, stately homes, balconies, coats of arms, etc. In fact, many of its monuments are heritage from its important past, given that in 1476 the Catholic Monarchs awarded them the Privilege of Villazgo for supporting Isabel I in the War of the Castilian Succession.

No visit would be complete without seeing its lively Plaza Mayor and monuments such as the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the Townhall and the Rollo de Justicia, dating back to the 15th century and located in the outskirts. Villanueva de la Jara is also known for being part of the “Footsteps of Saint Teresa of Ávila” Route, created to mark the 5th centenary of her birth. In fact, here we can find two convents founded by her and also a St Teresa Interpretation Centre. Not only will you be able to see the sites lit up at night, you will also be able to take part in guided visits to the main monuments, mushroom fields and wineries.
