Views of San Esteban de Gormaz (Soria, Castilla y León) from the Romanesque Church of San Miguel

San Esteban de Gormaz

Soria

San Esteban de Gormaz is in the western part of the province of Soria. Its beauty and its historic vestiges have earned it the status of Historic-Artistic Site.

The old town of San Esteban is formed by a castle on top of a hill overlooking the entire valley and several main streets which run along the southern side of the hill, inside the old city walls. It has two Romanesque churches, declared to be Cultural Heritage: San Miguel, built in 1081, which was the first arcaded Romanesque church in the province; and Nuestra Señora del Rivero, from the 12th century, which stands on a small hill overlooking the banks of the river Duero. Also outstanding is the town's arch, which was the entrance gate of the old wall and is currently one of the main points of access to the main square; and the medieval bridge with 16 arches which spans the Duero. In Calle Mayor you can see several large emblazoned houses, with coats of arms belonging to noble families.
