Located in a wide valley that opens up to the Cantabrian Sea, Mondoñedo is one of the most evocative capitals of the ancient Kingdom of Galicia. Its historic quarter has been declared a Property of Cultural Interest.
The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, a National Monument, preserves the original Romanesque doorway with a beautiful rose window and baroque towers. The transept and sacristy were later built in the Gothic style. The interior also offers a juxtaposition of styles, with mural paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, baroque organs, Gothic and Renaissance style choir stalls and a Rococo main altarpiece. It houses the Diocesan Cathedral museum, one of the most important museums of sacred art in Spain.
