La Mota Castle, Medina del Campo (Valladolid, Castilla y León)

Medina del Campo

Valladolid

The town's most outstanding feature is the castle of La Mota, from the 15th century, whose silhouette dominates Medina del Campo's skyline. As well as the Keep, also outstanding are the parade ground, the chapel and the queen's boudoir.

The town, which has been declared to be a Historic-Artistic Site, has a magnificent collection of monuments and picturesque corners. On a corner of the arcaded main square is the house where Isabel la Católica died in 1504. Her statue stands outside this historic enclave. Touring the town also reveals other treasures, such as the palace of the Dueñas family, a Renaissance-plateresque building with beautiful coffered ceilings and cloisters, which was once the residence of Carlos I; the extraordinary 16th-century Gothic collegiate church of San Antolín, outstanding on the outside of which is the Pópulo balcony and its tower, while on the inside there is a splendid high relief by Juan de Juni; or the hospital of Simón Ruíz, which has a large Herrera style courtyard; as well as several churches from the 16th century.
