Laredo

Cantabria

Nestled between the Treto estuary and the Santoña bay, Laredo is one of the main tourist towns on the Cantabrian coast.

It has one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the region: La Salvé, an immense five-kilometre sandbank. The town is structured into three well-differentiated sectors: Puebla Vieja and its suburb, the Ensanche area, and the extension from there to Puntal.

The first one was declared historic and artistic buildings in 1970. It is the original population hub, from the Middle Ages, and still preserves some of its old walls. It is made up of a network of alleys, featuring notable mansions from the 16th to 18th centuries, such as the house of the Mar family, the Marchioness of Arcentales, the Condestable, Hoz and Gutiérrez Rada. At the top of this sector stands the parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, with a Gothic design and a magnificent Flemish altarpiece. The second area, Ensanche, extends to Plaza de Carlos V and is the town's current commercial, administrative and services hub. Lastly, between Plaza de Carlos V and El Puntal, there are three long parallel avenues, flanked by the town's two beaches. The festivities in Laredo include the flower battle, which is celebrated on the last Friday of August and is a true show of light and colour.
